Did I hear that Linux offers a GUI; well; who's gonna explain this to the hard core win buff.

For starters Linux needs to market itself properly. Does anybody remembers any print/tele commercial (for Linux) in recent times? well not me... haven't seen any. MS had a headstart in OS and has literally grown with generations; with aggressive marketing; corporate recognition; a dependable product and most importantly by maintaining its track record of producing/updating high end enterprise software(s)year after year.

Yeah! I am an MS baiter myself; but what has other (supposedly) behemoths done in containing their dominance? Talk of databases and you have Sql server, document management ...you have their own version of PDF maker (ADOBE beware... MS has something stored for you guys in the long run...u guys might have won this bout though...), PLs/front end client interface designers and they have the impeccable .net studio, be it internet, mobile/distributed computing...MS is everywhere.. So where does that leave our pauper friend (read Linux). Sorry friends not happening in our life time...too far fetched to be true. UNFORTUNATELY....Ranju Anthonyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03483213101953487143noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2672427473119923109.post-57368307518641543022007-04-03T02:08:00.000-07:002007-04-03T02:08:00.000-07:00Something I want to add to stress the dominance of...Something I want to add to stress the dominance of the Windows platform : the importance for games. With Vista and DirectX 10 coming up (promising nextgen graphical details and photorealism, see for example the promising game Crysis), the PC market for games is growing, despite the increasing sales of console hardware. Linux for server/workstations (to replace Windows and expensive commercial UNIX versions) : definitely. Linux as a platform for games or multimedia : not yet, and I don't see it happening in the coming decade.

MatthiasAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14586533728410948341noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2672427473119923109.post-20515906373594731712007-04-02T08:11:00.000-07:002007-04-02T08:11:00.000-07:00hi Marco, interesting insight, I did a blog reflec...hi Marco, interesting insight, I did a blog reflecting on oracle's growth strategy and how linux fits in oracle's bigger picture, you can comment on it here: http://farazy.blogspot.com/2007/03/oracleacquisitiontimeline.htmlFaraz Yusufihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17773121910040178156noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2672427473119923109.post-25207027780711598482007-03-25T09:10:00.000-07:002007-03-25T09:10:00.000-07:00Dan, thanks for your post. Every time I try Wine I find that it gets that much better, and the releases have been at a blistering pace of late. What I would like to see is people like Red Hat, IBM and Novell putting their huge resources towards helping Wine/CodeWeavers.

I understand it would take many man years to achieve perfection, but these people have the resources - if not to achieve perfection, then perhaps to get close. Your approach is obviously a good one, and I'm sure having lots more people doing the same would get us there as quickly as possible.

Many thanks for all of your work, and for reading the article.Marco Craveirohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01039195055988254979noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2672427473119923109.post-16823283863027747542007-03-24T06:53:00.000-07:002007-03-24T06:53:00.000-07:00You're right about needing a rock-solidWine, but w...You're right about needing a rock-solid
Wine, but we have to be pragmatic about
how to get there.

I figure it'll take a couple hundred
man-years of effort to get Wine to
the point you want it, but only a
couple dozen to get it to the point
where even big companies without much
imagination or stomach for risk see
that it's worth it for them to get their
apps running.

So I'm focusing on a few key areas:
a) fix installer bugs
b) get Adobe apps running
c) in general, find out who's running serious desktop migrations, get their list of required Windows apps, and start fixing their bugs, or helping them fix 'em themselves.
d) mentoring new Wine developers

Each success in the above generates
more excitement, attracts more users,
and hopefully will result in more
resources being devoted to the problem.

See http://wiki.winehq.org/DesktopMigrationProjects
for the (small) list of confirmed migration projects that have provided lists of needed Windows apps.
(Feel free to add to this list if you know of any.)Dan Kegelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08897222275562703823noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2672427473119923109.post-76390772554707666012007-03-23T14:27:00.000-07:002007-03-23T14:27:00.000-07:00Dawg, your usual well thought out argument and su...Dawg, your usual well thought out argument and surprisingly unbiased :) I agree about the database side that is for sure. I think ignorance of the general population is one major problem ... a computer = windows. They just dont get the idea that a computer is the hardware and different operating systems are available. And sadly multi media seems to be a main, if not, the major selling point for computers over the last few years ... and so yes Microsoft dominate somehow :( Curse those codecs!!!

That said there is clearly significant move in the Linux camp for mass market desktops and it is one of general education ... slowly general people are realising that linux is not just a black screen for long haired hippies ... it is a fully functioning, solid operating system with an awsome GUI !!!!

Who knows when world domination will come!!! Has Vista saved Microsoft??? Who knows??!?!?!Scott Findlaterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07324523069794537212noreply@blogger.com
